Game Analysis:
Now, I'm sure we were all expecting a decent game from Cliff Lee in his first start as a Phillie. What we got instead was a complete work of art. Lee dismantled the Giants, no hitting them until the sixth inning, and keeping them scoreless until the eighth. Aside from Cole Hamels' complete game shutout against the Dodgers in June, this was the best game thrown by a Phillies pitcher this season. Everything about it was beautiful.
Lee helped himself out at the plate, too, as he doubled his career hit total in one night. At one point, his two hits were more than the Giants had. That's what kind of a night it was for the Phillies. The offense still wasn't great, but the four run seventh inning provided more than enough insurance last night. I'd still like to see more consistency from the bats, especially with runners in scoring position, but when you've got a guy like that on the mound, you don't need that many runs.
I don't want to get ahead of myself, but this was a hell of a first impression. Welcome to the Phillies, Cliff Lee.
Tonight, Joe Blanton (7-4, 4.11 ERA) looks to keep the mojo going. He's got a tough task, as reigning Cy Young award winner Tim Lincecum (11-3, 2.30 ERA) is on the mound for the Giants. Go Phils!
