Robin Roberts has passed away

Sad news this morning, as Philadelphia Phillies legend Robin Roberts has passed away at the age of 83. Roberts was one of the best Phillies pitchers ever, and was a member of the 1950s Whiz Kids that shocked baseball and made it to the World Series.

With the Phillies, Roberts went 234-199, winning 20 or more games in a season from 1950 through the 1955 season. His 1952 and 1953 seasons were some of the best in Phillies history, as Roberts won 28 and 23 games, respectively, with ERAs of 2.59 and 2.75. Roberts was also the first Phillie to have his number retired, as the Phils did so back in 1962, just one year after he was let go. Roberts was still an active player at the time, making him the second player in baseball history to have his number retired by a team while he was still playing. The first? A little known man by the name of Babe Ruth.

Robin pitched before my time, obviously, but Hall of Fame pitchers are hard to come by in any era. Between Grover Cleveland Alexander and Steve Carlton, Robin Roberts was the best Phillies pitcher of his time. He helped get the Phillies to their only World Series in 30 years, and was one of the best pitchers in baseball, even as the Phils began to slide down the standings again. He was a true Phillies legend, and baseball lost a great man today.

Rest in Peace, Robin Roberts.
