The Sixers Make Their Move Towards Iverson

With the Sixers floundering about as badly as I've ever seen them right now, they need something to give them, and the fans, a boost. It looks like that just might happen, as they've offered a non-guaranteed contract to Allen Iverson. After the Sixers met with Iverson for over two hours on Monday, this move could be seen coming, but at the same time, nothing has been signed yet, so the ball is now in Iverson's court.

Do I think that this is good idea? At this point, yes, I do. The Sixers are one of the worst teams in the NBA right now, having lost seven games in a row, and ten out of their last 12. It's not a pretty sight in Philadelphia, which is why I haven't been recapping many of the games lately: it's very hard to say the same thing over and over again and make it sound new after each loss. This team needs a change, and Iverson might just be the thing that they need.

Honestly, what's the worst thing that happens if Iverson comes back on this contract? He's going to bring the fans back to the Wachovia Center, which is needed right now, and he's one of the most prolific scoring point guards in NBA history. With Lou Williams out for two months, someone is going to have to run the point, since Jrue Holiday isn't close to ready yet. If he works out, he holds down the spot until Williams gets back, and the Sixers will cross that bridge when and if they get to it. If he's nothing but a distraction, and the fans don't respond well, the contract is non-guaranteed, so the Sixers can release him without a problem. It all comes down to what Iverson wants to do now.

Since nothing is set in stone yet, I don't have much else to say, other than I hope that Iverson does decide to come back to the Sixers. He started his career in Philadelphia 13 years ago, and it would just be fitting for him to finish it here. Plus, he's never looked right in any other uniform. If he does come back, it would be a win-win for both he and the Sixers, as Iverson would more than likely get a chance to start again, and Philadelphia would get their big draw to bring the fans in right now. After this season, both sides would have to sit down and talk again, but right now, the smart move for Iverson would be to come home to where his career started.
