Eagles Extend Andy Reid

The rumors about an extension for Andy Reid have been floating around for a little while now, and today the Eagles confirmed those rumors by extending Andy Reid's contract through the 2013 season. The idea of an extension had really picked up steam of late, what with a three game winning streak and a few of the younger players picking up new contracts as well. The exact financial numbers weren't announced, but the deal is apparently worth between $5 and $6 million a season, making Reid one of the highest paid coaches in the NFL.

Now, I'm sure that there are going to be those people who think Andy Reid coaching this upcoming game against the Giants is a bad idea. Those people will always be there, and they won't go away until the Eagles let Reid and McNabb go and sign Tony Dungy, Mike Shanahan, Bill Cowher, or someone along those lines to lead the team. While Andy has never won a Super Bowl with the Eagles, he has been one of the most consistent coaches in the NFL since he joined the team a decade ago. His 100 wins this decade are the fourth most by any coach in a single decade, and he has led the Eagles to what looks like eight playoff trips and five NFC Championship Games.

It hasn't always been pretty with Andy Reid, but just think where this team would be without him. When he came to Philadelphia back in 1999, this team was at the bottom of the NFL. Now, they're one of the most recognizable franchises in the NFL, and that's not just because of the fans. It's because this team is regularly at the top of their division, and, save for two years this decade, they've made the playoffs. Not only that, but his running the team as an executive, along with Tom Heckert, has allowed the Eagles to rebuild without seeing a drop off in talent. Over the last four years, the Eagles have added DeSean Jackson, Mike Patterson, Brodrick Bunkley, Brent Celek, Stewart Bradley, Trent Cole, Jason Avant, Jeremy Maclin, Winston Justice and even Kevin Kolb. That's a good list of home grown talent right there, and very few teams can match that.

While some (rather vocal) people think that Andy needed to bring home a trophy before he got more money, I feel like this extension was deserved. Over the last ten years, Reid has turned this team into a winner, and they look like they'll keep on winning for at least the near future. Whether or not you like the way he calls plays and manages games, you have to respect how well this team has done under him. You don't just win 100 games by luck, you do it with skill and knowing what kind of players you need to get the job done. Andy Reid has done both of those things, and as far as I'm concerned, I hope he sticks around until at least 2013.
