Phillies Recap: Giants-7, Phillies-3

Game Recap:
Two three run innings from San Francisco took care of Cole Hamels as the Phillies closed their West Coast road trip with a fourth loss in five games.

What went right?

Jimmy Rollins was 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Carlos Ruiz went 1-3 with an RBI.

Ben Francisco was 2-4.

Chase Utley was 1-4 and scored a run.

Eric Bruntlett, despite still being trapped in a black hole of suck, went 1-2 and scored a run.

What went wrong?

Ryan Howard was 0-4 and had a huge error in the fifth inning that allowed a run to score.

Cole Hamels lasted just five innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on ten hits. He walked two and struck out two.

Game Analysis:

Thank God this road trip is over and the Phillies get a day off now, because they looked horrible yesterday. Ever since the end of the Arizona series, the Phils have looked listless, and their offense has been just bad. This is a team that needs a day off right now, because if they weren't getting one, it would be a serious problem. They look tired, uninspired and anything else you can think of. I don't blame them, considering they haven't had a day off since the All Star break, but they still need to suck it up and play their best every day.

Hopefully, this will be the end of their recent struggles. Fortunately, they're still five games up on Florida in the division, and while the schedule doesn't get much easier for the rest of the month, this day off should help them get ready for a huge home series against the Marlins at the end of this week. Just like they did at the start of the second half, they have to show Florida how the big boys play. The last two games haven't been much fun, but they should just be a speed bump for the rest of the year. Every team struggles, so I wouldn't be too concerned.

Tomorrow, Jamie Moyer (10-7, 5.32 ERA) takes on Colorado's Jason Hammel (5-6, 4.66 ERA). Let's see if the old man can get the Phils back on the winning side. Go Phils!
